Interdisciplinary and Collaborative: Connecting Long-Term Ecological Research with Urban Resilience

Lecture by Dr.Evelyn Gaiser and Dr.John Kominoski


South Florida is ground zero for impacts of sea level rise in terms of vulnerability of this flat, porous landscape and the value of exposed assets (infrastructural, ecological, cultural). FIU is at the cutting-edge of trans-disciplinary solutions-oriented approaches to measure exposure, reduce vulnerability and develop actions to improve resilience. Evelyn Gaiser and John Kominoski will discuss several large collaborative efforts at FIU, including the Florida Coastal Everglades Long Term Ecological Research Program, Urban Resilience to Extreams Sustainability Research Network, and ongoing university efforts aimed at integrating the social, ecological and technical approaches to solutions, and discuss opportunities for engagement.

Dr. Evelyn Gaiser is the Executive Director of the School of Environment, Arts and Society and lead Principal Investigator of the Florida Coastal Everglades Long Term Ecological Research Program and Urban Resilience to Extremes Sustainability Research Network. She is an aquatic ecologist with a specialization on algae, and is dedicated to long-term studies to address the causes and consequences of environmental transformation. She has published over 90 papers in the peer-reviewed literature based on research in the Everglades and comparative studies across the globe, and also leads education and outreach geared at building interest in and engaging students and the public in natural systems science. She received her Ph.D. in Ecology at University of Georgia and has been at FIU for 19 years.

Dr. John Kominoski is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and Co-Pl of the Florida Coastal Everglades Long Term Ecological Research Program and Urban Resilience to Extreams Sustainability Research Network. He is an ecosystem ecologist that focuses on spatio-temporal scaling of organic matter processing, and his research builds on fundamental theories of ecology. He has 33 peer-reviewed publications from studies of multiple ecosystem types, spanning short-term small scale to long-term, large scale. He has a passion for communicating science to broad audiences, and has a strong history of offering training to undergraduate researchers. He received his Ph.D. in Ecology at University of Georgia and has been at FIU for 4 years.

Both will describe how their work involves social scientific research in an effort to make broader impacts within academia and the communities they engage with.
