Defne Sarsilmaz is a PhD Candidate at the Global and Sociocultural Studies Department at Florida International University. Her major track is geography and she specializes in feminist political geography. Her research interests include women’s politicization and minority struggles in Turkey and the broader Middle Eastern region. She is particularly interested in the intersections of gender, ethnicity, nationalism, and religion. Her dissertation research investigates the rise of women’s political consciousness among the Arab Alawite community in Antakya, Turkey. Based on archival and ethnographic research, she uses feminist geopolitical and feminist postcolonial lenses to make sense of the data she collected between 2014-2016. She is currently writing her dissertation, with an expected graduation in December, 2017.
