Janna L. Lafferty

Environmental and Medical Anthropology, Critical Food Studies, Political Ecology of Health and Bodies

Janna's academic and professional research has focused on socio-environmental histories in North America in the context U.S. and Canadian settler colonialism and the development of world and global capitalist food systems. Upon earning her B.A. with honors and high distinction at UCSD, Janna received the A. Irving Hallowell Award for excellence in sociocultural anthropology. She subsequently earned an M.A. in American Religious History from Duke University. Her professional work includes her time as assistant curator at the North Carolina Museum of History, and environmental activist work with Oceana's Florida Chapter.

Currently a Ph.D. student concentrating in Environmental Anthropology and Critical Food Studies, Janna focuses on the environmental and cultural politics of food and environmental health policy in the Pacific Northwest, with particular interest in food sovereignty initiatives, environmental justice communities, and ongoing struggles for cultural sovereignty as it relates to food provisioning, land use, and watershed management.

Janna was a recipient of the prestigious Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship (DPDF) via the Social Science Research Council in 2013. Through this award, the Andrew Mellon Foundation funded her to conduct preliminary research in her field site. In 2012 Janna was accepted into the Strategic Writing Initiative program at FIU, which trains select graduate students across disciplines in pedagogy and places them as instructors of undergraduate writing and rhetoric. She has served as Vice President of the Sociology Anthropology and Geography Graduate Student Association since 2012. Janna has also been co-editor of the Anthropology & Environment Society's (a section of the American Anthropological Association) ENGAGEMENT Blog since August 2013. She is currently writing a book chapter on food sovereignty movements for an academic edited volume on food in society, due out 2015.
