Shaida Escoffery Whitley is a PhD student at Florida International University in the department of Global and Sociocultural Studies. She received her B.A. in English/Creative Writing and Religious Studies from the University of Miami in 2014 and her M.A. in Africana Studies from New York University in 2016. She has also been an author since 2013 and a teacher since 2016.
Shaida intends to pursue the Sociology track to explore inequalities in healthcare for people of color, specifically working with women of color to increase patient advocacy and reproductive and maternal health disparities. She also has a deep investment in researching inequalities in our educational system, as well as, media representation for BIPOC. Her future research aims to promote change within different sectors of healthcare, education and entertainment.
