Dr. Charles Heck, PhD
Urbanization, Governmentality, Political Ecology
Charles Heck graduated from the GSS PhD program in 2016.
I earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, with emphases in political theory and comparative politics. During my undergraduate studies I studied abroad in Portugal and afterwards taught English in Brazil. I began graduate school at FIU in the department of International Relations and Geography, and fulfilled the requirements for a Masters of Arts before following Geography to the GSS department to complete a PhD. I was a Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellow for Brazilian Portuguese in FIU's Latin America and Caribbean Center during 2008-2009 and began researching in Rio de Janeiro as a result. I am interested in the politics of urbanization and urban policy for informal settlements as they relate to protected areas and environmental vulnerability, and more generally in urban geography, urban studies, global governance, and political ecology.
