Migration and Diasporas

Recognizing the increasing scale and significance of migration and refugee movements worldwide, we investigate the conditions and issues facing migratory, refugee, and diasporic populations at the local, societal and global levels.

The study of human migration and diasporas is a dynamic and multidisciplinary endeavor that explores the complex reasons why people migrate, how migration takes place, and the profound impacts migration has on individuals, communities, and societies. Our department brings together the expertise of sociologists, anthropologists, human geographers and social psychologists to provide faculty and students with a comprehensive understanding of how migration drives social change in both sending and receiving societies. Through our interdisciplinary curriculum, students will examine the social structures, policies, and inequalities that shape, and result from, migration patterns, as well as the economic, social, cultural, and political integration of documented and undocumented immigrants into new societies. The South Florida region provides a rich environment in which to study the spatial dynamics of migration, including the impact of immigration on established communities and the resilience of migrants and communities as they adapt to one another. We equip students with the interdisciplinary expertise and methodological tools necessary to navigate the complexities of migration in an increasingly interconnected world.
