Beverly Muzii

Bio

Beverly Muzii is a doctoral student interested in how community-based narratives shape collective memory, identity, and perceptions of resiliency in changing urban environments. With attention to the influence of historical patterns of urban change in shaping contemporary socio-spatial city dynamics, her research considers how urban renewal and gentrification interconnect with processes of suburbanization in Miami, FL. She is particularly interested in how gentrification-induced displacement from Miami’s urban core led to the (re)making of Black communities in suburban spaces. Focusing specifically on the formation of local governance structures and civic engagement platforms, her work explores how these communities translate(d) legacies of displacement into structures of political agency and self-determination, motivating civic participation in resiliency-oriented (sub)urban planning practice.
